Electron microscopy of a herpes virus associated with the agent of Marek's disease in cell culture.

Propagation of the agent of Marek's disease and production of a cytopathic effect in duck embryo fibroblast monolayer cultures was reported recently (21). A good correlation was obtained (14) between the occurrence of this cytopathic ef fect, the presence of herpes virus-like particles in infected cells, and the ability of these cells to reproduce Marek's disease in susceptible birds. Similar r...

DNA configuration in the core of Marek's disease virus.

Marek's disease virus DNA appears to be wound around a central structure connecting the two inner poles of the capsid. Based on electron micrographs of Marek's disease virions, a diagram of spatial configuration of virus DNA is presented. This diagram may explain the pleomorphic character of the herpesvirus core observed with the electron microscope.

Development and characterization of monoclonal antibodies to Marek's disease tumor-associated surface antigen.

Four monoclonal antibodies, A35, B94, EB29, and G152, against Marek's disease tumor-associated surface antigen have been developed and their specificities studied against a panel of Marek's disease and lymphoid leukosis primary tumors; Marek's disease, and lymphoid leukosis, and reticuloendotheliosis lymphoblastoid cell lines; and normal chicken cells. A35 and G152 are of the immunoglobulin M c...

Neoplastic diseases: Marek's disease, avian leukosis and reticuloendotheliosis.

The commercially important neoplastic diseases of poultry are Marek's disease, which is caused by a herpesvirus, and the avian leukoses and reticuloendotheliosis, which are caused by retroviruses. These diseases are responsible for economic loss due to both mortality and depressed performance. Marek's disease virus (MDV) and avian leukosis viruses (ALVs) are prevalent throughout the world, and ...

MiRNA expression signatures induced by Marek's disease virus infection in chickens.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Emerging evidence suggests that differential miRNA expression is associated with viral infection and cancer. Marek's disease virus infection induces lymphoma in chickens. However, the host defense response against Marek's disease (MD) progression remains poorly understood. Here, we uti...
